Gilbert Maxwell Sharpley, age 88, of Columbia, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday morning at his home, surrounded by his family.



He was born on September 26, 1928, in Barrington, New Jersey, a son of Thelbert E. and Marie D. Sharpley. After completing high school, Gilbert served his country in the United States Coast Guard as a radio man before completing his education with a Bachelor’s Degree. Gilbert Maxwell Sharpley, age 88, of Columbia, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday morning at his home, surrounded by his family.



He was born on September 26, 1928, in Barrington, New Jersey, a son of Thelbert E. and Marie D. Sharpley. After completing high school, Gilbert served his country in the United States Coast Guard as a radio man before completing his education with a Bachelor’s Degree. After college, Gilbert was united in marriage with Joyce Clark in 1950. He spent his career working with General Motors and loved to spend time boating on the Great Lakes. In later years, he moved to Columbia, Tennessee, to be with his family and while there, became an active member of St. Catherine Catholic Church.



Gilbert is preceded in passing by his parents; his wife of 41 years, Joyce; his daughter, Virginia Szajna; his brother, Ronald Sharpley; and his nephew, Terrance Sharpley.



He is survived by his daughter, Karen (Jeff) Seaman; grandchildren; Kimberly Seaman, Kelly (Stephen) Schurger, Paul Szajna, and Michael Szajna; great-grandchildren, Madeline Schurger and Matthew Szajna; four nephews; one niece; and son-in-law George Szajna.



Family and friends will gather at St. Catherine Catholic Church from ten to eleven o’clock in the morning on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at eleven o’clock, celebrated by Rev. Davis Chackaleckel.



The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Charles Ball, Dr. Janice Vinson, Gilbert’s special caregivers, and Hospice Compassus, for their wonderful care during the last years of his life.



In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please consider memorial donations in Gilbert’s honor be made to Hospice Compassus, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or to the charity of your choice.
